Answers

  1. What is Nazareth Academy?
Nazareth Academy is a private high school dedicated to the development of women. It is an outstanding high school where young women achieve their best in academics, the arts and athletics. It is a place where students can take risks, solve problems, explore ideas and develop self-respect. Located in the historic Maplewood District, the Academy is the oldest Catholic High School in Rochester, owned and operated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

  2. Why should I consider a Catholic School?
Catholic schools succeed because of the high expectations placed on all students. They give students structure, discipline, guidance and direction in a safe and nurturing environment with high level of parent involvement.

By providing an environment that support exploration of ideas, Nazareth Academy gives students the opportunity to express, question and analyze the issues they face in their lives. Academy students study course materials that provoke and inspire discussions of values, ethics, faith development and moral issues.

  3. Do I have to be Catholic to attend?
No. In fact 40% of our students are not Catholic.

  4. Why should I consider an all-girls school?
Studies have revealed that coeducation in high school perpetuates gender stereotyping. Teachers frequently call on boys more often. At Nazareth Academy, girls realize their full potential. In small classes with longer class time created by block scheduling, girls learn to stand up, speak out and take the lead. All girls take a full complement of science courses from biology to physics. Girls can pursue all their interests: music, dance, theater, journalism, art and many others, both in class and extra-curricular programs. Girls get to participate in Section V sports teams.

  5. Does attending a girl’s school mean I will not have a social life?
First, let’s be clear. It is a school, not a convent. Academy women have fun like other high school students and they have busy social lives.

  6. Where are you located and what is available for transportation?
Nazareth Academy is located in the historic Maplewood District of Rochester. Students come to Nazareth Academy from all 18 of Monroe County’s school districts. Students who live in the city of Rochester and are more than 1 1/2 miles from Nazareth Academy may apply for Rochester City School District transportation by April 1 for the following academic year. Students who live within a 15-mile radius of Nazareth should apply to their respective school districts for transportation before April 1 to arrange transportation to the Academy.
