    Mrs. Gutknecht's Fifth Grade Classes

    Science

    • We are using the text Fusion from HMH.
    • We will start with Physical Science, move to Earth Science, and finish with Life Science.
    • We do labs in class, and there are lab sheets that go with them.
    • These are some worksheets that go with the lessons that we begin in class, and some are completed for homework. The homework should not take more than 20 minutes! If it does, your child should see me and we can review how to do them efficiently.
    • Review sheets will be given before more tests – THEY ARE VERY VALUABLE!
    • Grades are based on classwork, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.

    Social Studies

    • We are using the World Studies series from Pearson Prentice Hall.
    • We will start with Latin America – geography, history, culture, and specific countries. Our next book from the same series is on the United States and Canada.
    • We do work in class that consists of PowerPoints, lectures, group work, research, and reading.
    • There are Guided Reading sheets that go with the lessons that we begin in class, and some are completed for homework. The homework should not take more than 20 minutes! If it does, your child should see me and we can review how to do them efficiently.
    • Grades are based on classwork, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.
    • Topics covered will include:
      • Geography
      • Latin America
      • United States and Canada

    Religion

    • We will learn what we believe, what we worship, how we live in our faith, and how we can pray.
    • We will celebrate religious feasts and liturgical seasons.
    • Often on weekends, your child will be given a discussion starter for your family. These are really nice times to spend as a family, discussing different topics.
    • Grades are based on classwork, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.

    General Information

    • I can be reached easily by email at sgutknecht@nazarethschools.org, or on Class Dojo. You can also call the office at 585.458.3786 and leave a message as I will most likely not be immediately available.
    • Attendance is important. If there is an absence, please contact the office for work that will be missed.
    • Homework is posted daily on the Internet. There is time at the end of class periods to copy each assignment into the agenda. This should be the student's independent work as it will help me to assess understanding of subject matter. Students will get tickets several times a year, in their agendas for missing assignments which need to be signed by parents or guardians.
