Our Grade 5 and 6 students have a new learning tool! They are all 'fired up' to learn about the world beyond the classroom and curriculum. In LSN, Learn Something New, each student selects a topic of curiosity regarding a world event, time in world history or a notable person.
Each student was given an initial list to select ideas and then search out additional topics of interest. As research ensued, students were asked to write down 6 facts about the subject.
WHY? We want to encourage students to learn more about the topics or people that they find important in world history. Our NY State curriculum provides us with strong guides, yet we know that when students have the freedom to lean into topics of interest, the scope of learning widens.
The possibilities are endless for the students! The one parameter outlined is to exclude pop culture and entertainment. We're going to stretch our minds beyond topics readily at our fingertips.
